At Floor Coverings International of Kennesaw, we love doing interviews with bloggers who have creative and unique ideas. Rissa is the blogger behind Riss Home Design and was kind enough to answer our questions and share her knowledge about how she got started in the DIY and design world!
Please tell us a little about yourself
Hi there! My name is Marissa, Rissa for short. I’m a graphic designer and love doing DIY projects in my spare time. My fiancé and I spend a lot of our time fixing up our big old house. A few of my favorite things: computers, coffee, bargain shopping, and music.
Why did you decide to start a blog? What do you enjoy about blogging?
My fiancé and I house hunted for over 2 years, and when we finally found the perfect home for us, I thought it would be so fun to blog about projects and things we fill our new home with. It started out just to show family and friends, and then I got into doing free printable and giveaways for readers. I’ve fallen in love with it!
How would you describe your interior design and DIY style?
I love modern, industrial-looking pieces. I love when a room instantly grabs your attention but also has a simple feel to it. I’m also a huge neutral color lover – give me anything neutral colored and I’ll find a use for it for someone. I try to leave the bright patterned pieces to our front porch – it seems to be the only room where it looks perfect.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I am a totally Pinterest addict – I find myself on there all the time looking at other blogger’s projects and just photos of beautifully put together rooms to inspire me. I also love going through high-end furniture store magazines and looking for ideas of things that I could DIY myself without paying a fortune. I also just recently started going to a vintage consignment shop that sells items that are still in great condition, just need a little fixing up. It’s great to walk around stores like that and find something so cool and think, I can totally paint this and put new knobs on it!
Well, I haven’t finished it yet, but I purchased an industrial style desk at a consignment shop and I’m in the process of sanding and staining the wooden top of the desk. The bottom half of the desk is metal with these great heavy casters, I’ll be shining up the metal to give it some life again. It was a great find with amazing potential, I can’t wait to show the final product in my office.
Here’s another DIY project I’ve recently done and thought other’s would like to see as well! It’s super easy and affordable. I have ours on our enclosed front porch that says “Welcome” for guests to see when they enter our home.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I also share free printables on my blog! I have an Etsy shop that I sell printables in, but I also love creating some freebie printables, gift tags, etc… on my blog for my readers. Kind of like a little “thank you” for following along on my blog!
